When I purchased my Ranger, the parking brake hardware had been completely removed. I need to replace the hardware to pass state inspection. I don't know why an automatic needs a parking brake, but my state requires it.

I figured out how all the hardware sits in a Youtube video, but only on one side. Can someone confirm how they are positioned on each side? Are they threaded the same, or is one reverse threaded?

Thanks!

I am assuming this is the 2010? My state requires it also, though sometimes the inspector forgets to check it. It is in fact sometimes called a "emergency brake" and you could use it if you suddenly lost your regular brakes. It also helps if you are on a very steep hill and put the truck in park. It can be difficult to get it out of park on a steep hill unless you use the parking brake to help hold the truck.

Attached is a picture of various parts of the system. The method they use to tie both sides together is a little hokey, but it seems to work, they have used this method for years. You will notice in the pictures one of the cable ends is mounted, the other just floats. When you pull on the front single cable, it starts pulling right away on the cable that is mounted solid, till that side runs out of travel. When it stops, you keep pulling on the front cable and it will start pulling on the other cable since the first cable ran out of travel. Like I said, a little hokey, but someone with a big engineering degree came up with it, and it does work.

I should have mentioned it's the adjusters I'm not sure about

2010 might still be in Fords system.
go to Ford dealers parts site and use your VIN.
should be able to get a parts listing/diagram. select related parts on the main diagram.

If you saw how tiny the parking pawl is in a transmission, you would never depend on just it to hold your vehicle in place.

That being said, the parking/emergecy brake setup on a 2010 & 2011 is horrible. The Explorer has the same setup. If you have the ability and the tools to do it, I would pull the axle shafts to work on them. It's probably due for a gear oil change anyway.
