2007 to 1998 "Running Board" Compatibility

Can a running board from a 2WD 4D 2007 XLT Extended Cab 6' (?) bed fit on a 2WD 2D 1998 Splash Extended Cab 6' bed?

The body and frame haven't changed from 1998 to 2011. So, yes they will work.

Ford has different part numbers for running boards between the 2–door and 4–door Supercabs. The suffixes are different.

The rear brackets are also different.

clarity from the first post, are they both extend cabs or is it possible one is a super cab?
I know there is some terminology foo here cause Ford calls it one thing and Chevy calls it another, but I'm talking 4 doors versus 2 real doors and non-door (was that even offered in 98+ ?)

I think we were both using the term "Extended Cab" that more correctly should be "Super Cab".

He described his as a "4D"; mine is a 2D.

Dunno if this helps or not.

Does one having a four door and the other not make a difference? The length of the cab wouldn't change and they use the same frame. I went straight from a regular cab to a four door Supercab, so I have no frame of reference. The mounting points should be the same, no?

No. Remember that Ford sold 2–door SuperCabs well before offering the 4–door version. The rear attachment for a running board is different between the two versions.

2007 painted step bar (Ford's name for the running board) for driver's side of 4–door SuperCab:
7L5Z-16451-EA

For the 2–door SuperCab:
7L5Z-16451-DA

Rear bracket, left, for 4–door SuperCab:
YL5Z-16485-CAA

For the 2–door SuperCab:
YL5Z-16485-BAA (also fits regular cab)

The part numbers are the same for 2007–2011.

For 1998 the only version shown online in OEM drawings has a completely different appearance. It looks like a flattened U with part number F87Z-16450-GA (left), and Ford calls it a "tube assembly". The 4–door SuperCab was introduced during the 1998 model year, but these drawings are shown for only the 2–door version. The brackets shown are completely different from the ones used for the straight running boards in 2007. The tube assembly was still available for 2007, but it has a different part number from the 1998 version: 7L5Z-16451-AA (left).

I think you would at least need the 2007 brackets to see if they can be installed on the 1998 first. But my suspicion is that the trucks are just different enough to be a problem fitting the newer running boards. You might need to do some modifications.

That all jives with what I read (here on TRS) - up till and through 1997, they called it "extend cab", and starting in 1998 it was 3" longer, called "supercab" and 80% of em were 4 doors but you could order a 2 door at a savings of $3k / also a jump seat delete option which saved you a bundle too.

The regular cabs got 3" longer, the extended cab stayed the same dimensions from everything I've heard

If I had to guess they changed them for the 4 door so the steps went further back maybe changing the support to handle weight further back or someone just found a better way...

Depending on your abilities I'm sure at worst it should be workable...

Wow...thanks to all! Been out of town and haven't kept up with posts...sorry about that! Yes, Ford only shows one type of board for the '98s and its brackets do not match those '07 boards let alone not having the holes in the frame that the '07s use. Back to the drawing board!
