The easiest V8 donor for a 1998-2007 Ranger 4x2

New member here. I have read a bunch and now I have questions.

I want to do a 5.0 swap in a 1998-2007 2WD Ranger.

I saw the thread on “The easiest V8 donor for a 1998-2007 Ranger 4x4 swap would be the 1996-2001 Explorer/Mountaineer 5.0 AWD”. Is this also the best donor for 4X2?

I think you need a 4x2 explorer 5.0.

Yep, those are the years. Mechanical not much difference but past 2000 with a Ranger the wiring gets a lot more complicated. The motor and computer are what makes the swap so easy, find a transmission that suits you.

Can I use an auto trans from the explorer donor?

Sure can, several have. Best to find a Explorer that is a 4x2 or you have to convert the existing. It's one of the strongest autos from Ford.

Does the Explorer donor come with the recommended 8.8 rear axle?

Yes, all explorers 95-01 will have a disk brake 8.8. 96-01 will have an available v8. Don't forget about Mercury mountaineers in your search for a donor vehicle.
