I have hum that seems to be coming from the front end, loudest between 30 and 40 MPH. I bought the truck 6 months ago with 29K miles and it was a little noticeable and someone said it was just the tires. It has 39K miles now (same tires) and it's gotten louder and can be "felt" a little. I'm getting worried.

Oddly, when I turn at least slightly to the right, the noise and vibration go away. It gets a little louder when turning left. There is some up and down play at the differential end of the left CV joint. And some (less) up and down play at the transfer case end of the front drive shaft.

The tires are wearing well. The front wheel bearings and hardware are tight. The oil in the differential is gray, and there might be just a little metallic shine to it.

So, does anyone have any ideas on where this humming might be coming from? Should I stop driving it? Should I have not bought something else?

THE NEXT DAY--The inside of the front tires are feathered a little. I switched the LF and LR tires and this greatly reduced the hum to about the level that it was when I bought it 10K miles and 6 months ago. It still stops humming when I turn right. I would still appreciate any feedback on the play in the CV joint (a problem or no bug deal).

A WEEK LATER--I replaced the left (driver side) wheel bearing and the hum went away. There was very little play in it, but it was something to try. Hope this helps someone.
