A coworker has a 2003 2wd ranger that recently started chirping, which sometimes leads to screaming (him and the truck), though only while moving which makes the stethoscope test impossible. Belt and tension are good, replaced the idler pulley which had a worn bearing, didn't help. No visible weeping at the water pump, noise is inconsistant but happens at least every other day in commute. Another forum suggested the cam synchronizer, poster seemed knowledgeable, my gut says water pump, but I'm new to post distributor technology. Any suggestions, and especially test methods would be appreciated.

chirp

My A/C doesn't work.At times it clicks on&off when I'm not using it.I'm a Journeyman Electrician. It seems electrical, but I have'nt fixed it.House/Car.A/C-D/C Wife says I'm lazy.I guess so.Long story short it also chirps alot. With a Huge,Long screwdriver like stethescope.Touch A/C to ear.Check around.Works cool. Be CAREFUL The belt is right there. ............................................................................................................................................................my bad you already tried the stethescope trick.Still might be A/C or low steer. fluid.I'm wondering when my plastic synchro will go.I hope there's a metal replacement. But I hear that the synchro squeeks alot.Maybe it's just started. If it's not a bearing I would replace synchro just to be safe.Thank god it doesn't have a timing belt:yahoo:

The cam synchro squeaking/failure is primarily caused by poor lubrication near the upper bearing of the synchro. One way to test if it's the syncrho or not, is to try and get a little motor oil into the top of the syncrho to lubricate things. (this is easier said than done) If the noise goes away, then you'll need to replace the syncrho asap, before is fails completley, and locks up the engine. If the noise persists, then you can consider other areas.

If you didn't replace the tensioner then I'd start with a new one of them... There is where most of the squeals come from..
