OK so we wear out our Rangers using them for work. I prefer the 4.0s over the 3.0s.

This problem is on one of our 3.0s (2003 Edge 256,000 miles):

Yesterday the driver had the oil pressure drop to 0 he stopped the motor immediately. Upon restart oil pressure was fine. Now this morning oil pressure is erratic, gauge is flickering.

I say drop the pan an replace the oil pump and screen. Sounds simple enough but how big of a job is it and where is the "Step by Step for Dummies" list located.

Your suggestions are well appreciated, he is heart broken over his baby's illness.

Almost surely you have a problem with the electric sending unit! 90% of these cases is the sender and NOT the actual oil pressure. Before doing anything else install a KNOWN good gauge and sender to VERIFY the actual pressure.

Electric sending unit? Maybe. It's a known problem on the 3.0 that the cam synchronizer wears out usually at 100k and you have way more than that. It is also what drives the oil pump and whenever it goes bad the oil pump no longer turns thus causing zero oil pressure. I'll find a link to some other threads discussing oil pressure because they are plentiful.

If it's intermittent, then I agree with Big Jim, it's probably the oil pressure sending unit (switch). If the camshaft position sensor gets out of phase with the crankshaft position sensor, it will throw a CEL.
