2000 5.0 Explorer Swap Into 98 Ranger 4.0

Great! I was going to hook up the 4wd lights this weekend but now we got this storm headed for us and I have to get everything picked up on the property. We just got the hurricane warning a little while ago. Shouldn't be anything major though.

Good luck with the storm!

For what it's worth, one of the items on my list may be related to the wiring for the shift lights. I noticed last night that the radio (I used its switched power to supply the relay) will stay on with the key off as long as the headlights are on. The way the lights are set up, they get constant power and are switched on by the ground side. I think power is flowing through the bulb to pin 86 on the relay and backfeeding across to the switched wire on the radio.
Something like that... I'm still trying to get my head wrapped around it.

Thanks man. Looks like it slowed down a little bit and is gonna build a little more. The gulf is like a liquor store to hurricanes this time of year. Lots of warm water to get drunk on. Sounds like there is something crossed up in the wiring but doesn't sound major. I am sure you will get it sorted out.

Honestly I'm questioning whether it's a symptom of a different problem. It behaves as if the warning lights are getting power from the illumination circuit rather than the key switched circuit, and I can't imagine that's the way it's supposed to be set up. I'm also not getting backlight on the cruise switches, so maybe something has been moved previously.

It may be a coincidence but both sides of the lights could have went out. Did you run the power and ground of the gem for the 4wd lights? I wonder if something is touching and backfeeding.

The lights receive power by default through the instrument cluster, and are switched on using the ground leg of the circuit for each light from the GEM. I only touched that side by clipping each of those wires at the GEM and wiring them in using the below diagram (made using my notes from the 4406 thread at Explorer Forum).

I am really starting to think this is a separate issue and bad luck.

It definitely started after the changes, but the only explanation that makes sense is the instrument lights getting power based on headlight switch position rather than ignition switch. You don't get warning lights on your truck with the ignition off and lights on, so you?

I could probably solve this with a diode between pin 85 and the power feed from the radio, but I want to know I'm not masking another problem before taking that step.

If I am following you correctly by warning lights you mean the parking/hazard lights. I can turn all my lights on without the key switch on and with door open it chimes at me letting me know they are still on. So yes, power to them with key switch off. And yes, instrument lights should come on with either of the two on positions of the headlight switch and only with the light switch on does any of my instrument lights come on.

To clarify - with either of the two on positions of the headlight switch and the ignition switch off, instrument lights still come on? If so, I'll definitely need a diode. I'm surprised this hasn't come up before in the 4406 swap thread.

This is correct. Key off and headlight switch in either on position the radio, instrument, cruise lights all come on.

Well I replaced the cam synchro, fuel filter, fuel pump, and also changed the transmission fluid and filter. Only thing that sucks is my fuel gauge is off by a 1/4 tank now.

Can you put the level sender from the old pump on the new one?

Probably going to have to. I'll just have to pull the bed back again. On a positive not it made a hell of a difference performance wise. Oh and how you been haven't heard from you in a while.

Doing well, just struggling to make time to stay on top of all the things I need to get done. Just added a motorcycle to my list of projects last night. Would have gotten some done on the truck this weekend but my wife had to work and I was on dad duty. Soon...
