Has anyone found, or added from junkyard parts, an oil cooler on a 2.9?

Just curious

Never did it before, but I do not see why something like this would not work. The 2.9 takes the standard Ford V8 filter for a 302. That's what this fits. Not sure about exhaust pipe clearance though for the cooler lines.

Awesome. Thats the part i was curious about was clearence. I didnt even think about using a V8 adaptor. I might order it and try it

.. does a 140hp 6 cylinder NEED an oil cooler? 😋

No lol.

But heres the thing...ive noticed my lifters tick less or not at all when its colder out.

I know...band aid on a shotgun wound....but if i experiment for the betterment of the 2.9 community the so be it :)

If you want to bring yourself some good karma by bettering the 2.9 community.. a good first step to take would be mailing all 5 2.9 enthusiasts pamphlets about the virtuous ford 2.3

🙂

Ill rip 3 plug wires off and drain 4qts of oil and still hand a 2.3 its ass.

5 2.9 fans? Cmon man theirs 7 atleast.

Small...but rabid :)

@rusty ol ranger ,
When I first learned that the Ford 2.9l was vulnerable to heat I spoke with my mechanical mentor. I asked what could I do beyond a solid functioning cooling system to have a little extra insurance.

He suggested adding an engine oil cooler. I went to the library, then dug into my stack of truck magazines, Ford Motorsport and Racer Walsh catalogs...even the reasources I had for dirt bikes.

It turned out that using a remote oil filter adapter was the first step. After the filter, to ensure sufficient oil supply at start up a thrmernal valve which sent 90% of the fluid strait back to the engine and 10% to the oil cooler; at 195° that valve had opened fully allowing 90% of the fluid to flow through the cooler with only 10% going strait back.

This made me feel extra comfortable ditching the crank fan/clutch. It took quit a bit more for the temperature indicators to move from their normal positions, once up to temp.

Because it seems to work so well, I have used them in all my engines. It even adds oil capacity to the system (depending on how far away the filter, valve and cooler are).

I mounted the filter forward insude the passenger side frame rail, the valve just forward if it and the cooler out in front behind the grill. This set up gave the engine just under an extra quart of lubricating potential.

Getting ready to swap a 2.9 in a BII where a 2.8 lived. Fuel injection and all those wires. Fuel system is going to be a pain to swap in. Why? Because I have a spare 2.9 with brand new heads on it, doesn't use a drop of oil, and I over-revved the 2.8 a month ago and bent some valves in it.

I thought these were non-interference engines, but apparently if the valve is hanging open enough, the piston will kiss it. I just did a compression test, and several of the cylinders are low. Not dead, but not like the others. When it happened,, the rpms went sky high and then the engine started making a popping sound. Never ran again and it cranks funny.

I didnt think about a remote mount either. That would probably do double duty by getting the filter away from the exhaust too.
