I have a 1988 ford ranger 2.9 4x4 auto tranny and I'm having problems with it idling like it should mostly when the engine starts to warm up, then it starts to act like its going to die. Some times it does but starts right up, and other times it catches its self and runs fine for a while. My other thing is I know its an older truck with 195,xxx miles but it should get better than 10-12mpg just wondering what other trucks like mine are getting, and if you have any suggestions to get better mpg let me know.

i would check plugs and wires. if you havent done them or cant remember when the last time was, go ahead and replace them along with the cap and rotor. if that doesnt fix the idle issue, it may be the IAC valve. pull the codes and see if anything comes up. as far as mileage, i get about 16 mpg but ive heard others are doing better than me. also check the o2 sensor, they can be a fuel mileage problem
