My 2.9 in the BII stopped running on Friday. I backed into the driveway after driving it for about 1/2 hour to load up the parts for my manual transmission swap. I got in it to leave and it would crank with no start. So I started checking and replacing parts. I have replaced the coil, the TFI module, the tank fuel pump, and the fuel filter to no avail.

It is getting fuel and fire, but it is still not starting. I am going to check the timing today as soon as I can get another set of hands to help.

Any other advise?

I'm not too familiar with the 2.9 but does it backfire or sound like it's attempting to start?

Timing is a good place to start.

It doesn't back fire or attempt to start.

The only thing I can guess now is that the timing chain jumped time.

Possible...not real probable.

have you done a compression check?? it should be fairly even across all cylinders, 120+ psi closer to 150psi if real healthy. try that before digging into the timing chain.

If spark and fuel are present. then compression and timing are missing.

with some help, see if it will "try" to start with a brief spary of starting fluid.

& yes double check the timing. Also take note of the condiction of the harmonic balancer...they have had a few cases that inner & out hub have slipped...then making the timing way off.

I have tried starter fluid in the intake, it did nothing but a very minor back fire.

I dropped it off at a shop, maybe they can fix it.

Sounds like a timing issue to me, basically what Imenriched said

if it jumped time at the timing chain, then IMO it needs to be changed. That is something that I want someone else to do. I have faith that I could do it, but no time to do it.

heard that, no time that is....hope it turns out well, meaning not too expensive for you.

SO it just died ??? no whimper, no ominious sounds of catistrofic failure?

I backed into the driveway and shut it off, loaded the transmission up, and got back in it to leave. It wouldn't start.

It might be the same as mine did, On the pass side fire wall, there is a sensor with a plug pull the plug and give it a shot of WD 40 or other type cleaner/ lube

Have not had a problem since

Just talked to the shop; it was WAY out of time. I guess the chain jumped a cog.

I guess after the Dunes trip I will be replacing the timing chain.

Bummer. Had a belt strip out a bunch of teeth on my 84 Laser, pulled into a parking lot and something just felt weird when I shut it off. Treid to start it to leave, lotta spinning, no starting. Fortunately they let me change it there, and the FWD Chryslers are easy and relatively inexpensive to do a belt change on. 2.9's like any other old school motor, gotta pull the whole front end apart. While you have it apart, paint your water pump and water outlet, and chrome your front cover. Good luck..

I wont paint any aluminum parts on an engine. The aluminum disapates heat and when you paint it the heat is trapped in the part.

Hmmm wouldn't think that would be much of a consideration with cooling system parts...suppose that would still hold true if you painted it with VHT paint?
