I just recently rebuilt the 2.3 in my 86 ranger and since I installed it on Monday, and got it running its performance has progressively gotten worse. I had the machine shop change the cam while they were in there with one they said was a couple steps above stock. So now right off start up it runs nice and smooth, but after about 30-60 seconds it begins to get worse. Some times it will get better and idle fine sometimes it get will get so bad it stalls. Now I have completely blocked off the EGR valve because it had a vac leak in the diaphram and most of it was not hooked up anyway. Also sometimes it seems as if the timimg shifts around I know that unless the distributor loose or the belt jumps around it should not move, but can some of the electronics cause this?

So here is my question: What simple thing am I missing? I'm a big truck deisel tech so I don't mess with gas engines to much anymore.

Any information you guys might have would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Is your truck carbed or fuel injected?

You can check the quality of the spark timing by putting a timing light on it and checking to see how steady the mark is.

Did you set the ignition timing with the SPOUT connector removed? The ECM will adjust the timing based in the 'knowledge' that the base is at 10btdc. If you did not remove the spout, the base will be wrong. You can also set base timing after running the KOER test. For about 2 minutes after it gets done with the tests the ECM will leave timing at base, IIRC.
