3.8L EFI swap questions

BTW a 390cfm carb. sounds like a bit to much for the 2.8. Try a 350cfm carb. or Motorcraft 2150 carb.
A properly set up vacuum secondary 390 is about as good as it gets for the 2.8. The primaries are much smaller than the venturi's on the 350, so you get great airflow through them for part throttle operation.

one thing im confused about. If the CFI only needs a pulse from the Distributor to tell it to open and close injectors, why is there not a way to do this with duraspark? I have started doing research for my swap and I never knew you had to removethe duraspark.

my engine literally has none of the original wiring on it... its durasparked and all the crap cut out. this news is very crappy.

after doing some more reading am I to understand that I do NOT need any of the original harness from the B2, only to remove my duraspark box and dist. drop in a TFI Distributor, bolt on the TBI, mount the TBI computer and plug in the plugs to the TBI, TFI dist, 44psi fuel pressure, and it should be ready to go?

You got it other then power to the computer and splicing a few wires, I have a wiring diagram to the 84 T-bird that you may need to help you out I can e-mail it to you if you like, got it from my libary. It doesn't need any of the emission things to allow it to run. I have the o2 sensor and the EGR pluged in but it doesn't have a vacumm line controling it. You dont need the vacuum pump, or other things. I'll can post more detailed pictures of my set-up if you want, they will be put in my build thread. Or go to my build thread, the link is in my signiture, and look at what I did so far and watch the video of it running, it was idling high at the time but thats all fixed now

You need the harness going into the driverside of the firewall but thats it. The original BII computer and harness isn't needed.

It doesnt just need a pulse to to know when to fire the injectors but also needs to know when to advance and retard the timing. The computer also controls the idle. At a set RPM the injectors go from opening and closing to staying constantly being open and the more throttle you give the more open they get.

I'll say that my set-up came out of an 84 T-bird that had an automatic trannsmission. When I put it on my truck it runs great. When I give it some gas the engine RPM goes up likeit should but when I let off of it the RPM's stays there for about 2-4 seconds then drop back down to idle. I think this has to do with it being programed with know it was made for and auto tranny and not a manual like my truck is. I'm not concred, hell I use it to my advanted when going to take off, when I can actual drive the truck legally and not just around my block.

Another advantage is it starts right up everytime and really not much time is need to wait for it to warm up. My dad likes the set-up so much that when he gets the money we are going to be getting another system and doing it to his only we might try to find one with a manual tranny and see if that will avoid the high idle thing it does.

I you have anymore questions about this, I'll try to answer them.

who makes an aftermarket TFI dist for the 2.8? my stock stuff bit the dust years ago and i got home in limp mode, threw all of the parts away,,, jerry rigged duraspark and have since bought all NEW duraspark parts. I suppose i could probably sell these parts and recoop alot of the TBI swap cost beings they are all new within the last 3years.

So exactly what vehicles can i get this entire setup on. Maybe i missed it somewhere but i only see individual vehicles mentioned not a broad year range and model range.

Heres a link that will help you. BTW I got mine off an 84 Cougar but its the same as the T-Birds.

http://therangerstation.com/tech_library/2_8_FuelInjection.html

As for an after market distributor, dont think theres any. Either buy new or get one from the junkyard. Cost for the TBI set-up for me was $75.

Anymore questions please ask.

so 80's cougars and thunderbirds with 3.8.

84-87 Ford car with a 3.8, such as a Mustang, LTD II, or Cougar, etc... A 3.8 from a Taurus is the Wrong FI. By far, this was the most popular engine to be found in 1984-87 Cougars.

Be sure to read everything in the link I provided or just go to the tech. library and look under Carbs. and Fuel injection and find 2.8 fuel injection. READ IT ALL CAREFULLY!!!!

When you do get the system be sure to take pictures and label where everything came off of. It will make your life easier.

Anymore questions please ask.

As you may can tell by my absence in this thread I will not be going foward with this swap in the foreseeable future. I found a 96 Probe with a 2.0L 4 banger and 5 speed. I picked it up 3 weeks ago for $500. Decided it would make a good cheap beater for work and get better gas mileage than the Ranger ever could. On the first tank of gas I averaged 20 or 24 MPG with the clutch slipping like hell, on the second tank (first after replacing clutch) I averaged $30 and still have some tune up work to do, so I think I made the right decision. The 84 is being parked for the time being and after I get a garage built it will be getting rebuilt, completely from the ground up, with the exception of the motor seeing it has less than 5K miles on it.

That said I intend to keep reading on your swap incaes I still decide to do this down the road.
