I had to pull my PS inner fender to do some work on the engine. It always has bugged me post swap, the thing is full of holes from all the 2.8 junk... looks like it was shot with a shotgun.

Is there a different engine stetup out there that wasn't as hard on the inner fender and doesn't have a ton of holes in it?

I never really paid attention before, will a second gen fit? If so the same question applies...

I would wonder about maybe the 2.9 or other engines but I can say mine is probably just like yours since there's quite a bit of stuff tied down to my fenders.

All the Rangers I've ever seen (2.3, 2.9, 3.0, 4.0) have used the inner fenders to mount a bunch of stuff, so the only way I could see getting rid of all the holes is to either use an old fender liner and melt the plastic into the holes to fill them (soldering iron works well for that, but it's kinda messy) or just leave the liners out altogether and cut out some rubber mat to use as a splash guard......

I used windshield urethane to fill all the holes in mine. It has seen temps from -55 (Gunnison,CO) to +100. Take your time and cleans it up nicely.

I used some rubber matting on my driver side to keep water away from my wires and distributor...worked out pretty good since the driver side seems to have a few more holes than the passenger side...

As for later models, not sure...never looked into that...but I will be looking for a set of rear inner fenders as soon as I either swap the box or patch it up...so I might check out the newer styles since the older ones are disappearing faster than ice cream on a hot day...
