1999 Ranger SAS - Full Width D44 Coil Setup

78-79 bronco/f150 coil mounts and any 80+ f250/f350 shock mount would have taken care of things for you.

looks great though

yea... that was an afterthought after i realized i needed to redo the shock setup. hadn't planned for that.

thanks :-)

and its a pain in the F'in ass to get the power steering bracket out of a 99 to swap in a saginaw steering pump! 2 of the 3 bolts are hidden... you need to take off the tensioner in order to get to them. and theres 2 more on the side (13mm wrench) ands not the easiest to get to. with this much room under the truck though... it was easier. hopefully tonight that bracket will be off!

ok, i know I've been lacking pictures lately... so i'll try to get some on saturday, but as an update....

the saginaw power steering pump swap is completed. went just as smoothly as the tech article, except on a newer ranger there are a couple extra gotcha's.
1.) remove the tensioner (on mine the head was stripped, so i needed a bolt extractor)
2.) in order to use the bolt extractor, i needed more room.. fan shround and fan came out
3.) dont expect a fan clutch kit to work... it just plain doesn't. use a small 8mm socket and 1/4" ratchet to hold onto a bolt on the water pump pully. then about a 1 1/8" wrench on the shaft of the fan. twist... and it comes loose... easily (at least it did for me).
4.) 2 extra bolts on the side of the bracket (drivers side) that are double nutted. having a 3" body lift makes it a ton easier to get to these 2 bolts.
5.) in order to get the bracket out.... expect to have the fan and fan shroud out for this also. you're not gonna fit through the wheel well if you have stock components in the way (i didnt... but i had a gearbox in the way that i didn't feel like taking off... just too damn heavy).
6.) follow tech article... only difference i did was grinding off ONLY want i needed off. i tried to leave as much of the fins as possible.
7.) good luck on finding a new bolt for the tensonior if you need it... i re-used the old 1... gonna see if i can find a replacement somewhere.....

so all back together... NO LEAKS... steering works like a ****in charm! that stock pump was screwy... it caused the gearbox to turn too sharp with very little movement. i feel like i'm driving my brothers chevy with this setup (a good thing... yes).

now.. new problem... O/D light comes on and flashes, causing the tranny to pressure up and cause hard shifting (thanks to a thread in the transmissions area that i foudn about the problem and what its doing). its hard enough of a shift to actually be scary. i'm wondering if the vacumn lines would have anything to do with this?? i disconnected them from the HUB's on the old setup and the lines kinda hang there. i can see other lines running elsewhere.... wonder if they have something to do with the tranny......

this tranny worked fine driving around with a ford 9" in the rear and a stock front. but now that the front is gone... and a d44 is in its place... this happens.

if anyone has any thoughts, let me know! otherwise i'm taking it to the shop about a mile down the road to have them do a front end alignment and see if they can come up with a solution to this problem! :-)

my vaccuum Lines have been off for about a year, that wont do it. The flashing OD light is a tranny code. You just need to hook it up to a scanner and see what code it is throwing. Can you take a picture straight from the back for me when you get time??? thanks

and since these pictures, i've added a steering stabilzer. this has helped out tremendously! :-) Now on to the extra needed lift in the rear end, hooking up those shocks, and getting a front end alignment done! :-)

have you taken any pic's of your front drive line set up yet? im in the middle of a sas on my 99 and am not sure what to do there. your truck looks sick. gives me a little hope.

i will take some after work tomorrow. **disclaimer** the front drive shaft setup is NOT recommended, i take no responsibility for someone trying this. what we did worked for this project and expected for offroad use only. i will try it this winter if the V8 swap hasn't been done yet.

got any pics from the front? curious as to how much tire youve got hangin out of the fender wells.

looks pretty good though.

so its been a while since i updated this. i drove the truck all winter, drives great (besides the tranny being messed up).

as one guy put it... if i were to replace the bad shocks in the back, it drives like a cadillac of mud trucks.

next project after i have the mustang back on the road is still to swap in a 302V8, NP205, and C6.

yea... the $$$ keep going to parts for the truck... or fixing up my house. bigger tires once i actually "need" them :-)

i'll do the v8 swap before the tires too.. but it'll get 35's or 38's

thank you
