ok, i know I've been lacking pictures lately... so i'll try to get some on saturday, but as an update....
the saginaw power steering pump swap is completed. went just as smoothly as the tech article, except on a newer ranger there are a couple extra gotcha's.
1.) remove the tensioner (on mine the head was stripped, so i needed a bolt extractor)
2.) in order to use the bolt extractor, i needed more room.. fan shround and fan came out
3.) dont expect a fan clutch kit to work... it just plain doesn't. use a small 8mm socket and 1/4" ratchet to hold onto a bolt on the water pump pully. then about a 1 1/8" wrench on the shaft of the fan. twist... and it comes loose... easily (at least it did for me).
4.) 2 extra bolts on the side of the bracket (drivers side) that are double nutted. having a 3" body lift makes it a ton easier to get to these 2 bolts.
5.) in order to get the bracket out.... expect to have the fan and fan shroud out for this also. you're not gonna fit through the wheel well if you have stock components in the way (i didnt... but i had a gearbox in the way that i didn't feel like taking off... just too damn heavy).
6.) follow tech article... only difference i did was grinding off ONLY want i needed off. i tried to leave as much of the fins as possible.
7.) good luck on finding a new bolt for the tensonior if you need it... i re-used the old 1... gonna see if i can find a replacement somewhere.....
so all back together... NO LEAKS... steering works like a ****in charm! that stock pump was screwy... it caused the gearbox to turn too sharp with very little movement. i feel like i'm driving my brothers chevy with this setup (a good thing... yes).
now.. new problem... O/D light comes on and flashes, causing the tranny to pressure up and cause hard shifting (thanks to a thread in the transmissions area that i foudn about the problem and what its doing). its hard enough of a shift to actually be scary. i'm wondering if the vacumn lines would have anything to do with this?? i disconnected them from the HUB's on the old setup and the lines kinda hang there. i can see other lines running elsewhere.... wonder if they have something to do with the tranny......
this tranny worked fine driving around with a ford 9" in the rear and a stock front. but now that the front is gone... and a d44 is in its place... this happens.
if anyone has any thoughts, let me know! otherwise i'm taking it to the shop about a mile down the road to have them do a front end alignment and see if they can come up with a solution to this problem!
