Hello All,

This is my first post so please be gentle.

I have 1999 Ranger 2.5L 4Cylinder, New wires, plugs, new battery, no vacuum leaks, new fuel pump, it runs great.

The problem is it will fire up. Die. Then it has trouble starting again especially when it's been driven. I took it to a local repair place and one guy said it was the ignition module (which trough my research looks like this truck doesn't have one) he also mentioned something about it being $400ish, he described it as a two sided unit (plug on each side) and said the exhaust side usually goes bad.

The problem is driving me crazy any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Welcome to The Ranger Station.

It could be the coil pack.
yours has two, only one is used for starting, then both work once it is running.

I forget which coil fires during start, but connecting a spare spark plug to a plug wire Will tell you which. Ground that plug during the test.

You do not have an ignition module, fire that mechanic.

Both coils are firm g like champs. I'm stumped. It only happens when the truck is warm.

Any help would be amazing!!!

First thing I would do is find out if it is spark or fuel that is the issue.
Get a spray can of Starting Fluid.
Next time you have a no start, remove the intake plenum and spray some into the intake, try to start and see if it fires.
If it fires then fuel delivery is the issue.
If it doesn't fire then spark is the issue.

Since you don't mention it I assume the engine runs well at any temp after it starts, so no bogging or hesitation while driving.
Reason I mention it is because if the exhaust system is partially blocked the backpressure can prevent starting after warmup, but this would also have other symptoms while driving.
