The speedo on my 1998 Ranger began working intermittently then stopped altogether. I replaced the abs sensor on the rear axle as that was what seemed to be the most popular problem. No difference. Then it was brought to my attention.. IF the ABS light is NOT on, and the speedo is not working, the ABS sensor is NOT the problem as it controls both ABS and Speedo. And the problem most likely lies in the speedometer itself. Can anyone help sort this out?

I had a similar problem on my '97 F350, I was reading all sorts of horror stories about the speedometer needing replaced and such on that, so I took the speedometer out to check the circuits for burnt resistors which there weren't any, not wanting to spend money and needing the truck I put the speedometer back in a couple days later and it's worked just fine ever since. So, that means it was a bad connection at the speedometer, easy fix.

Yes, your new info is correct, the rear axle sensor runs to the ABS module where it is corrected for tires size and axle ratio, it is then sent to computer, speedometer, and cruise.
