1998 Ranger SAS Project

the steering box thing was exactly what I was going to ask, got a 94 parts explorer and have been oogling the 96 AWD 5.0 explorer contemplating the SAS. this thread has helped steer me in the right direction.

I was thinking of the EB dana44 but would prefer a HP44. maybe narrowing a fullsize coilsprung 44 from a 78 Bronco?

thanks for the great thread love the progress pics too.

nice work:icon_thumby::beer:

I eventually want to get rid of the 31" tires and go with 33's.....but that's about as far as I want to go.

just read the post, good stuff, im starting a D60 swap with 10.25 on a 99 as we speak. the best part was this quote.......I said the same thing 4 years ago:icon_rofl: you poor unsuspecting soul. it never ends

I just re-read this thread. Again. What I don't see is, anything about the trackbar and how you have it mounted. Would LOVE to see that. I would also like to ask about the frame side lower control arm mounts. Are those square with the frame or turned a bit to match the arms to the axle?

Nice build, looks like it works very well. Might get to mine someday...

Okay......went hunting with the truck and it did awesome! Could not have been happier. I will have my Pro Comp All terrain 33 X 12.50 X 15's on today. I'll take some more pics and post them. I'll try and get some more photos of pieces parts everyone's wanting information or visuals on.......stand by!

Okay. It's been since May that this Ranger project was finished. The big test (and the one which mostly worried me) was hunting season beginning November 24th. This truck has been through hell and back (as far as hunting in National Forrest goes) and it has done superb! I could not be any more happier. The Pro Comp ALL TERRAINS were a BIIIGGG help. I have placed that truck in creeks and in some pretty big holes and not once had to be pulled out....that's a first so far!!! I will be adding pictures of the final product below and some close ups to hopefully answer questions.

Here is a picture of the rear of the truck......I added add-a-leafs to the back to help level it out.

Here is a closeup of the driver side with the new 33 X 12.50 X 15 Pro Comps on it....fills it in nicely!

Shock mount and Coil Spring plate.....I will eventually cut the brace off on the upper shock mount and lift it a little higher and re-weld it......but....no hurry right now.

Looking underneath from Passenger Side toward front seeing the lower radius arms that were made.

Okay - here is a picture of the gear box mounted to the inside frame. Notice the silverish bolt in the center....that was an addition as a while back the small plate came disconnected (for lack of better wording) from the bigger plate.....yup - no steering.....we welded the crap out of it and then stuck a 6" bolt through the frame to be on the safe side....never had any more problems with it.

Looking at the Drive Side where the gear box is mounted. Notice where the engine dampner shock is....to the left you will see a bolt....that's the 6" bolt that goes through the frame for added strength....

This is looking at the Driver side showing a plate that we built for the drag link.....one day I'll probably re-do this one and customize me a drag link - - but for now this works fine.

This is looking down onto the top of the gear box.
