Will the extended cab of a 1996 fit over a 4.0L with the right stuff removed? I'm considering frakensteining two trucks together and want to drop the cab over a frame with the engine and trans already installed.

Sure it will...

What I want to do is take a frame with engine and transmission mounted in the frame and drop the cab over that.. So not the same as dropping the engine and/or transmission into the engine bay. I know it will fit - wondering if it will fit the way I want to do it. Is the answer still yes? How about if I want to do the same thing with a 5.0L engine on the frame instead?

Yes to the 4.0L... That’s how the factory did it. They built the entire chassis with the drivetrain, then dropped the body on.
Maybe with the 5.0L... I can’t say yes with 100% certainty because you modified something, but the factory did that with the 5.0L Explorer.

It is very convenient to remove cab, fix the driveline issues, and then reinstall the cab. As noted, that's how factory did it.

I can say it goes over a 5.0/4R70W in a '99; haven't tried in other years.

Yeah...I like pulling the cab for certain issues if I can.

But the hvac may be an issue....if it's not a post 96
