I have a 93 Ranger 4.0 5 speed (mazda) 2wd, previous owner ran it out of fluid, damage is done. Tranny is noisy in every gear except for 4th, but mostly in 1rst and 2nd. Is it worth (economically) to tear it apart or just hunt for a new tranny before this one blows up. Keep in mind been driving it as is for a year and a half, and is no noisier now than when I picked her up. Love this little go getter and was wondering what my options for a tranny were? Does it have to be a mazda 5 speed from a 4.0 ranger? When I go see the junk yard what range of years would work? Could I look for mustang parts? Thanks guys your'e all very helpful and my experience has taught me accurate as well!

1993-1997 Ford Ranger/Explorers would be your best bet at the Junkyard. Yes from a 5spd and 4.0. Have fun.
