1993 pcm 4.0

I’ve got a 93 ranger 4.0 5 speed. The pcm will not boot up. I’ve changed the capacitors already but still same issue. Acts like it’s in the voltage regulator circuit. I tried another pcm and it will run fine. That eliminates any issue with voltage supply to the pcm. Anyone familiar with board repair in these units. Seems the board schematic is proprietary to ford and I can’t find it. Also I’m still looking for another pcm for this. The one I tried had issues and I sent it back to eBay. That caps were corroded in it as well. I have a 4.0/2wd/manual. If I use an auto pcm I’m sure it would still run but with a cel. I know the 2wd/4wd don’t matter. Thanks

It looks like only California emissions is available rebuilt. Blue Streak does offer a service though.

I checked on the auction website, there are some rebuilders but they won’t touch it since I put new caps in it. I didn’t see any on car-parts. I’ll take a look again.

93 is kind of a weird year but you may have some other options. Take a look at your engine first - do you have a cam sensor in the back of the engine block, behind the intake manifold or is there just a round plug bolted in there? It's pretty tight in there, look hard. Secondly, do you have EGR? That would be bolted to the driver's side of the upper intake and there will be a metal tube that goes down to the exhaust system, along with some hoses & wires.

If you DON'T have either of those things, you should be very safe to run a 90-92 PCM from a 4.0 Ranger or Explorer that had a manual. There were no meaningful changes in those years. However if you DO have one or both you should stick with what you have or a '94 donor with those options would work as well.

You can use the automatic trans PCM but like you said it'll throw a couple codes. Might get you by for a while until you can find the right part though.

That means it probably doesn't have EGR or a cam sensor but to safely use a 90-92 PCM you need to check. As far as I know, NONE of the 90-92's had either of those options. It gets messy in 93 and 94 though. For example my '94 Ranger has neither... a '94 B4000 that I recently disassembled had both. They were both federal emissions trucks. '93 is when things started to change and you will see weird things in both those years.
