I have a 1992 ford ranger I have owned since 1998. It is a 2 wheel drive, 5 speed 2.3.This was my first vehicle. In the time I have owned it the engine has been replaced, there has been about 10 bottles of nitrous ran through it and around 80,000 miles with a lot of sitting. One the new engine I have swapped timing belt once and need changing again as it is rotten and cracked. In the last two years I have lifted the truck 11 inches and put on 35 inch super swamper boggers, 513 gears and so on. The truck pulls well and in current form gets around 20 miles per gallon. I love this truck and will keep forever as it was originally a gift from my grandfather.
Last month I purchased a 1983 ranger diesel, with the standard perkins 2.2. Truck is decently straight, has two small rust spots. Has new alternator, clutch and a list of maintenance items. It is tan with three different color brown stripes. Truck is ugly and will need paint if I decide to keep it in one piece.
So heres my question, How much work would it take to swap the 2.2 diesel in place of the 2.3 gas. So i would want the diesel 2.2 in my 1992 ranger. Obviously I would need to swap the 4 speed in place also. Are the shifters in the same place in floor? Both trucks have a/c and would want to keep that. Also the 1992 has electric fans so thats a space saver. For fuel tank I would want to use a 30 gallon in bed tank and then mount a tire carrier on it. More than likely need to have a new driveshaft cut and so on. Is there anything else I am missing? I have a strong 220 welder, tools and use of a shop.
If anyone has done this before let me know what kind of issues you faced.
