if this isnt in the right place let me know (first timer)
I have a 1991 Ranger 2.9 5 speed (mazda trans i believe? non detachable bell housing.) It is making one hell of a noise when the trans is 'engaged'. It is not coming from the bell housing area...im not thinking it is the throw out bearing, the noise is coming from the middle of the trans, and is loudest when im running in third gear. When im driving in fourth the noise goes away. But the noise is present in 1 2 3 5 and neutral. Not sure about reverse, im not a backwards speed racer. I am hoping for an easy fix, but if i have to tear it apart i will, im not a complete idiot, so with a little bit of guidance I shouldnt have a problem fixing it. Any help will be very appriciated. Thanks.

Are you certain it isn't the throwout. There isn't much inside these transmissions a handful of bearings and the synchros. Kit to rebuild transmission is about $200 on ebay I have one and plan on putting it in the transmission in the next couple of weeks.

I am pretty sure it's not the throw out. I will be checking it out soon because I intend on doing the 4.0 clutch upgrade. Thanks for your help if it is an internal issue I'll check that kit out

The bearing where the input shaft meets the output shaft, and keeps them supported and aligned, if it goes bad, makes noise in every gear except "direct drive" which is fourth. In forth, the input and output shafts are coupled together and this bearing does not turn. In any other gear, there is speed differential between the input and output, thus the bearing is turning.
