Starter sound. So this truck has been on this starter for 7-10 years and it sounds really bad. Metal on metal starting screeching etc. it has sound like this for years and I acquired the truck 3 years ago from dad and now the sound is getting worst. What would cause a loud starting on this truck.

Usually it has something to do with the starter and the backing plate. Make sure the bolts are tight and the plate isn't damaged.

Is it an auto or 5spd?

I'd think a starter that's grinding the bendix into the flex plate or flywheel would eventually get quieter as it "self clearance" itself. As mentioned above maybe something is loose and getting worse as it continues to eat itself

Bendix getting eaten I think is caused by improper endplay on the starter nose. I've found a few of my starter Bendix getting eaten and found missing bushing or the nose worn so the Bendix goes to far forward. Worth a look....
PS:
In Fordspeak, a Bendix is called an "overrunning clutch drive".
