Hey everyone, been wanting to do this swap for a while now and finally have the means to do it. I’m sure my questions have been answered somewhere along the way, but it’s difficult to find information on my exact swap. There are a ton of knowledgeable people on here and I feel this is the best place to ask.

I have a 1987 bronco II 4x4 5 speed with the 2.9l engine. Then drivetrain is pretty worn out, so I’m swapping it with a 5.0. I got a 1999 donor explorer with 99k miles, it’s an automatic with AWD. I know I want to pull the 5.0 and harness from it, and the 8.8 rear axle. I would like to keep my bronco II manual, so I plan on getting a later model M5ODR2 from a 97+ f150 for better shifter placement as well as a BG 1356 transfer case. I know I will more than likely have to have driveshafts made as well. Then get D35 front axles. I also plan on doing a 2” body lift and 3” suspension lift The question I have is what ECU and harness would work the best with this? Or am I better off getting some type of standalone ECU, if so which one would be best? I read in some of the forums that you can modify the 2.9l harness to accept the 5.0 by adding 2 more injectors to the harness, but they I would still need and ECU for the 5.0. I would like to keep the truck somewhat street able with light to moderate off road use. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

AFAIK, any Explorer 5.0 was automatic. That requires "tuning" for a manual. (Also PATS). Also pretty sure all other 5.0s were distributor ignition. Not sure how that fits into a Ranger swap. It has to be doable cause I've seen a few carbureted 5.0 (302) swaps into Rangers.
