Hello, I am new hear and new to the 4x4 trucks. i recently bought a 86 ranger whit a 2,9 manuel trans. and been trying to fix it by my self but nothing works.
So got a friend of mine to take a lock at it and he told me to do alot of difrent stuff replace alot of parts around the fuel system. change spark plugz and spark wiers. and when i get it to run and take the spark wiers off 3 spark plugz i dont see the enging change no sign of life ther so it run´s on 3 cyleders i have tryed so much, And everyone is telling me to just swap to the 4.0 exploer. And i have been locking at that but i have been told that its just take the 2.9 out and put the 4.0 inn dont need to change anything, And since i dont know anyone who has done it befor i pretty scared of doing it. what do i need to do to change to the 4.0 liter. is it all the plugz and the computer and stuff ?

P.s Sorry for the crapy english from iceland

First things first. don't change any more parts until you have diagnosed the problem. Which three cylinders are not firing?

The 4.0 swap is a little more involved than take parts out, put parts in. You have to change the trans if you have a manual because the 4.0 will tear your transmission apart.

There is also a lot of wiring that needs done. It's involved, but extremely doable if you can get and read the right wiring books.

Who ever told you that is a straight swap is incorrect. There are some mods that need to be done for everything to work correctly. There are a few threads on here that explain it in more detail. Also you should really look at the electrical and not fuel if your not getting spark. And find a mechanically inclined friend with tools..

Its 4.5.6 And 1 gets spark if i take the plug of and barley let it tuch the spark plug

Is it mabey esayer to just fix the 2.9 then swaping ? If anyone know´s what is bothering my Ranger plz let me know

Look at the distributer cap and router. Look for corrosion or burns. It sounds like a spark issue to me.

I've also got a 2.9 litre, try checking the distributor and coil its more likely a spark problem. also if you have an voltage meter that reads ohms or resistance try checking the plug wires if they are reading around 4500 then they are good but if they read over 8000 then they are more then likey bad. but honestly it sound like a sparking problem to me if only 3 cylinders are firing.

I agree with above . Best way to do this is to start at plugs and work your way back to the battery . Time consuming yes but a good way to solve find the issue.
