1986 Ford Ranger 2.0 Idle/Stalling Problem Help!

Yes that is a FRAM filter. I only use FRAM filters. Ive never had a problem with them, never had them leak. Ive alredy had a disscution on them and what not. People can use whatever POS generic filter they want I use FRAM PERIOD.

Whats so bad about them?

What kind of fliter do you recommend blackwidow67?

frams dont leak, never had that problem. they dont filter very well, and they allow oil drain back so it leads to a dry start in the morning because the pump has to fill up the oil filter. personally, i use mobil 1 filters or k&n filters. but a motorcraft, stp, purolater, ac delco, all those are good choices. more than one of my vehicals would have lower oil pressure and dirt in the oil more frequantly when using fram. i used to swear by them because of the no slip part. but one day i read something wicked sludge posted about them and decsided to try something different. well by switching to mobil 1 filters. i gained 10 psi outta my oil, (using an aftermarket gauge, i never trust the originals)

and i dont use crap oil. i use quaker state, valvoline, or sometimes mobil 1.

i do however use the fram tough guard filters and they seem to be ok. but i still try not to use them as much as possible. but hey its your truck, if fram works, then thats cool.

Thanks danger!! I just went out to takes some pictures of that exact same thing and was going to ask you all if that was it.

Does my engine have the hook ups for an oil pressure gauge also?

Ok, I actually have 2 connections like that. One is lower/closer to the oil filter on the lower part of the engine and the other is about 3-4 inches above it on the top half of the engine. Want me to take pics?

No pics necessary. The one closest the oil filter is your temp sender. The one above it is the oil pressure switch.

Ill put it into detail of what is what. The red circle is where we put a manual temp guage. The green is the factory oil pressure guage. The blue is the manual temp guage.

Just trying to help out and sort the confusion. Want to see this truck run.

Sorry. I just bought the water temp gauge and the tach.. I'm going to attempt the install on both right now.

Well I got the Tach put in. I'll have to do the temp gauge tom.

I tested the Tach and it works fine. I ran through the same routine.

1. Cold Start (idling around 1150 rpm)
2. 5 minutes goes by
3. All of a sudden high idle goes away and it drops to about 600 rpm and it struggles like hell. It fights to stay awake. Tries to idle back up around 800 - 900 or so, but is stumbling around 600rpm.

I'll be able to gauge the temp tomorrow and I will video the whole thing.

Thats the same thing my 2.3 FI did but its on the engine stand now because I didnt want to mess with it. Some people ay it was the EGR valve but I dont know. Like my dad says about feed back carb. systems, the computer doesnt control how much fuel it gets, it can run without all of it. Manual fuel pump and carb. the end.

Do you have emissions testing in Texas? If not then I would be playing with the carb. but know where it is before begining to play with the screws.

But first things first, find out if its over heating. After that I dont know whether to play with the carb. or check the timing next. My guess though timing.

I have a 2.3 carb. and manifold outside ill take a look at it and see if I can find an idle screw amd see what it is set at.

Hopefully I'll have my truck running in the next week. Just getting wiring done.

the mixture screw on these carbs is a pitA to get to. when looking at the front of the carb its on the left side towards the intake close to the front. you need a tiny screw driver to get at it. and its hard to see.

like dangerranger83 said, mine didnt ever have the computer hooked up, and the mystery box on the right side inner fender had half the vaccumms gone. but it still ran like a champ................................................till i blew it up. lol

i really dont know what ford was thinking on that design. i mean a carb engine with a computer, tempurature sensors, o2 sensor, and all the emissions crap. its just an epic failure waiting to happen. lol

Haha yea I know. It's raining like crazy so I can't install the temp gauge tonight.

I tweaked the mixture screw on the old carb. I remember it being a major PITA to get at.

Update: I replaced the EGR valve. Same thing happens though. I just noticed also that when I refilled the radiator with water, ran the truck till it started dying, much more of a gassy smell and smokey, then removed the radiator cap the water was sort of foamy. It only got smelly/smokey when as the truck hit that low idle and it wanted to start cutting out on me. Could I have a blown head gasket?

I have a new radiator coming in so I'm waiting a few more days till I install the coolant temp gauge.

Looking back at the pictures of what was coming out of your exhaust, you might have a head gasket going out slowly....hope its a head gasket and not a cracked head.
