1986 Ford Ranger 2.0 Idle/Stalling Problem Help!

Good to see you used the blue rubber gasket...that's what stopped much of my oil leaks...and you can reuse them...but I'd not recommend removing the valve cover again unless you really need to...the rubber stretches...it might shrink if you dunk it in ice cold water, but haven't tried that myself...

As for the sludge in your cooling system...mine had the same amount of crud...and it comes mainly from using too much water...and not the proper mix of anit-freeze...but mine was probably together for more than 10 years without being properly flushed...so quite a bit can accumulate...

Oh, btw...you're engine has so much shine to it I can hardly see some of those pics...:)

Too bad it doesn't run like it looks! :)

Question: I want to replace the gasket on the oil pan also. What would that entail? From looking at it underneath it looks pretty simple. Just drain the oil, remove the bolts and the pan falls down. Is it that simple?

Is there an oil pump filter in there also that should be replaced while it's open?

Not that simple. You have to get around the oil pick up and there is an internal plate that sits at an angle to prevent sloshing, etc. that you have to manuver around. Basicly a job best done with the engine out.

Moderators: Big question, does this thread now belong it the Contruction forum or it is fine where it is at? I'm just wondering because now the engine is being fixed on and what not.

i like it hear

more people come to the engine forms i think

Yeah, I replaced my oil pan with the aluminum one out of a mustang...but did it with the engine out...much easier...you might be able to lift the engine enough to pull the pan if you have clearance on the back end (which you don't seem to have too much of if you have difficulty removing the valve cover)...and the valve cover removal might give you enough clearance...and I've heard of people doing it that way...

As for moving the thread...it's still working on a 2.0/2.3...doesn't seem to be doing a rebuild on other parts...yet...:)

True Mark_88 hes not rebuilding on other parts.....yet.

Thanks for the tip Mark.

Do you know where I can find out which year/cars came with this 2.0 1bbl engine? That way I know which parts I can cross-shop.

Another forum member has an extra egr spacer and is willing to ship it to me! So I should have it put back together shortly. If it's still overheating the last step is to break it down to the head gasket. That will be a chore. :/ I get nervous when it comes to adjusting/removing the cam, springs, lifters, timing, all that stuff I really don't have a clue about.

I dont know of any other ford vehicles with the 2.0 1bbl in it. As for head gasket, thats something I've never done but I'm always up for learning. If I had to do it to my truck I would. You dont have to remove lifter because your truck doesn't have them and nothing to worry about springs. Timing is none to hard. Basicly remove cam, then unbolt the head. But lets see if the problem will be fixed before doing any of that.

Hope to SEE more progress soon.

Actually, I've seen plenty of Mustangs with the 1bbl, but they were 2.3's...and the carb was a bit different as was the connector to the distributor...

I think only the 87-88 in Canada had the 2.0, and all the ones I've seen had the 2bbl....but it seems they were used in earlier years in the US so I'd think the 1bbl would be an option...or standard equipment with the 2bbl being the upgrade...

Believe it or not, mine actually had cruise control--with a manual tranny...it took me a few days to figure out what it was...and about an hour to yank it out and toss it in the scrap pile...but that's just me...I hate autopilot...the danged thing couldn't even steer down the highway...:icon_thumby:

I've seen plenty of Stangs with the 1 bbl too but no other vehicles with the 2.0.

I've read a lawsuit that involved a guy who bought a motorhome and though the cruise control was auto-piolot....well he turned it on and went back to make something to eat only to have the vehicle run of the road. Well he sued the place he bought it from saying they didn't tell that the vehicle couldn't drive on its own and won the case.

hahahahahahahahah

i had the same problem not to long ago. i have a fuel injected 2.3. my problem was caused by not holding the ignition long enough. As a result it would backfire through the trottle body and gum it up. so i took it of and cleaned with carb cleaner and it works just fine

Yeah, I think I read that on here...some people need explicit instructions on how to get out of a bed properly...or they sue whoever they can for them being so dumb...

I think the government should outlaw those types of things...

I was told that story by my step-dad who had just bought one at the time. Gone now though and he regrets getting rid of it.
