1986 Ford Ranger 2.0 Idle/Stalling Problem Help!

Mark,

Are these the two hoses you are talking about? The two to the left of the green circle running into the trucks cabin. Those two hoses were VERY hot I noticed yesterday, after you confirm this i'll unplug one, run it into a bucket and see if it spits coolant.

Finally got a computer where I can see the pics...looks like you still have the air pump in place (the one on the left side is the air pump) so I guess your emissions testing is needed...they just recently changed the laws here so I do have to get the e-test done on mine...and it may require an air pump...that I just recently tossed out...dang!

Anyways...no...as someone else said...and I guess you've figured out by now...

I guess "GREEN" is in. :/

Yup, have all the emissions equipment still in place. The new carb really makes the truck run well, just need to figure out this overheating issue. Hopefully when the timing light comes in I'll be able to adjust this.

I watched a DIY for timing on youtube. I understand how to hook the timing light up, but have no idea where this "timing mark" is on my engine. Guessing on the crankshaft somewhere..

Just shine the light in the general direction...if there are marks to be seen you will see them...eventually...

But if the engine is otherwise running good (ie revs up and doesn't cough, sputter or spit) then your timing is probably close enough...

Still havent figured out the over heating problem after replacing all the parts? Now im stumpted. Only other thing I can think of is to get the radiator cleaned out.

I had idle issues with my 2.0 last summer. Found the carb muonting nuts would vibrate loose causing a vac leak, it would run fine but would die at idle. The idle adjuster screw also fell out. Loctite is now my best freind!!

I had a similar issue with my carb, but by the time I figured that out I had already done the 2bbl carb swap...

Idle feels/sounds perfect, but literally in 5-10 min it gets extremely hot and starts smoking out the tailpipe and wants to die on me. I replaced the thermostat, water outlet, water pump, and also re-ran all the old coolant lines.

How do I go about cleaning out a radiator? Is there any specific product I should flush down it. I never actually "flushed" the coolant system. When replacing the old parts I noticed quite a bit of this yellow solid buildup.

Just got the timing light in. Going to go out there and check it now.

Google Search on cooling flush

This might help...but maybe someone can offer more specifics on products...I know Canadian Tire sells several flushes...even a kit with a spout connector that you can leave in for later use...

I would flush the entire coolant system and put brand new coolant in it. If you have solid build up in your coolant sytem then it might be clogging it up. My cousins car started running warm and we took off the radiator cap and the coolant was so bad in it, it looked and felt like river mud. Plus I ended up changing the water pump because of it. But she brought it to a shop to get the system flushed.

^^ ditto...

I just checked the tech library and noticed there was no flush bulletin...might be a good opportunity to see your name up in lights...

I'd do one, but no camera yet...

Theres alot of stuff that needs to be put in the tech library but I dont want to put how to flush the cooling system in it.....I really dont know how (yet).

there is one thing you are missing and it will make the truck idle it is a mixire contorl vavle and you can get it a the auto parts store it tell the ecm where to set the fuel and spark and timming it will idle if you put it on

So here is what my timing belt cover looks like. Lot of help. There is a notch unlike the other rivets in the cover. I figure this is TDC. I guess going up from this is advancing the spark and lower is retarding (could not find a pic with the original sticker online anywhere). Now, there is absolutely no indiciation on my pulley to match my timing light to. I adjusted the distributor to a decent idle based of sound and vibration, but will have to find a way to set it correctly before I drive it. Engine still got hot very quickly so will probably look into a radiator flush.

I noticed this coming out of the tailpipe which I've not seen before. Looks like oil/soot - almost in liquid form. Could I have pushed something through into the oil pan?

Looks like unburnt fuel or moisture (water) but good water not anti freeze. (Thats something to splatter all over the white vehicle next to you...LOL). Dont give up on this truck.

lol

I'm going to pull off the belts again and look for a notch in the pulley. I'll try and mark it with some paint. I heard there should be one there.
