1985 turbo t bird tranny??

Does anybody know what manual transmission does the 1985 turbo t bird comes with? i cant find any information online. Reason I ask is because might buy the engine, wires, computer and 5 speed tranny all for $500 and i was wondering if it was the same M50d my 2.3 ranger has. I want to keep my truck 4x4 so hence the question. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks

I think all the manual t-birds had T5 trannies.

yeah, its a t5, not set up for a t-case, its got a splined output shaft.

Oh I see, any other options as for trannys so i can keep it 4x4?

i dont see why you couldnt use the m5od... it should bolt up as far as i know. im kinda assuming the internals are the same as a 4.0's m5od, so as long as that checks out i would figure it would handle the power... thats the best i could come up with, hope it helps...

Yeah, the only major difference between the guts of the different M5OD-R1s is the gear ratios. I'd think the M5OD should hold up just fine.

Thanks Kunas, i just wasn't sure if would bolt up. I'm not trying to build a race truck or anything, I'm just looking a little bit more power and this seems like a good idea.

I think all the manual t-birds had T5 trannies until 1989, when they went to the M5OD-R2 in the Supercoupe.

It's a cable operated T5, just run your M5OD as it's just as strong, that's what I'm running and the tranny is holding up just fine other than the syncro's wearing out (probably have 200k on them, don't blame them).

Just use the clutch for a Ranger as the splines are different for the T5, pressure plate and flywheel are the same...
