an 85 had what, a 2.9 at best? or maybe only the 2.8 existed at that time? Ive never driven a 2.9 but I did once drive a 2.8 in a 84(?) bronco 2. It was a slug, was most likely wore out but my (at the time) ‘88 2.3 felt more powerful. In that era the 8.8 wasnt in existence yet so that leaves the 9” drums on a 7.5 rear at best, single-piston front calipers , so even if you had a “hot” motor under the hood and deep enough gears you still ain’t stopping a heavy load very quickly. Nice old truck, but the “heavy-duty” towing is a bit of a laugh.

"Heavy" is of course relative but it was a step up from a base model truck.

Ranger's had single piston front calipers until '95. 31 spline 8.8 was available from the begining... in cab chassis trucks.
