Shouldn't be a problem, 289 and 302(5.0l) are the same block, lots of How-Tos on small block Ford V8s going into Rangers.
Trans might be an issue if you want 4x4 setup.
No computer issue since you are running carburetor
Speedometer will need to be looked at, not sure if the '96 used the VSS(vehicle speed sensor) on the rear differential or transmission.
Fuel tank will need to be dropped, the high pressure pump removed and straight line put in it's place, then I would use an external electric fuel pump, but the 289's mechanical pump could be used.
Pre August 1964 engines have a bellhousing boltpattern that is unique to them. Limits you to 1964 and older transmissions... if your truck is 4x4 pretty much forget about finding a 4x4 trans that is pre-64 or anything to adapt the car one unless you run a divorced t-case. If the engine was older you could run anything 1965-2001.
I can say from experience that non-OD transmissions suck on the highway.
Your truck is the ideal canidate for the nearly plug and play Explorer 5.0, even the Explorer radiator will drop into your existing mounts.
Getting a carbed engine to work where there was a fairly late model EFI system isn't as simple as people want to believe it is.
My first thought was the different bolt pattern on the early SBF's. Those bellhousings are getting rare and expensive, just incase you would ever need to replace. Modern Driveline does make adapters for the 5 bolt for the T-5 and others, don't know about auto's though.
