My new 2.3L has this "5-spd automatic O/D trans" ($1000 option).

With a 4.10 ratio regular axle, the performance and fuel economy are fine.

When did Ford go to these?

Any experience/opinions on longevity?

Just wondering. It's my first automatic. I'm more a stick guy. I thought Ford used Mitsubishi and Mazda trannies.

They do, for manual transmissions.

The 5 speed autos are OK. No better than that. You'll always do better with a stick, as long as you drive it correctly (always within the powerband -- and 2.3Ls are OHCs, so it is pretty high).

No automatic will last as long as a properly maintained manual. Especially, the Mazdas can last effectively forever (longer than the rest of the truck) if lubricated properly.

I believe the 5 speed autos are around 10 years old. The 4 speed auto is very similar. The 3 speed auto from earlier models is a flaming POS.

The entire A4LD family (including the 5R55E you have) have been made in France from the begining, the first year for one to venture in to a Ranger based vehicle was 1985, they have had them ever since. The 5R55E is a pretty good transmission from what I hear, my parents 2002 Explorer has one with almost 90k on it and it shifts like new. Really, it seems the later in the Ranger's production run you get, the better the automatic transmissions are.

Thanks mucho!

Like I said, I've always been a manual trans kinda guy, but couldn't pass up the incentives on this '08.

Just got 30 mpg on my second tank of gas so I'm feelin' good all around now.
