Hello I’m new here but I just put used motor in my truck and on start up it smokes for a bit then stops.
I noticed it having tiny bubbles in the coolent reservoir. thrown p0305 on cold starts idles roughy untill smoke clears don’t notic power lose…. Anyone got any tips???

The combination of P0305 and bubbles in the coolant reservoir suggests that you have a head gasket leak on cylinder 5. It will keep getting worse until it gives out completely. I would do more investigation along the lines of confirming that is the real issue, but head gasket failures are not that uncommon in the 4.0 sohc, especially in engines that have been driven hard before warmed up.

Thanks I thought if it was head gasket it smoke all the time but thanks for the info it’s going to the shop today

What other possibilities is ther cracked head???

Their reviews are not that promising, those rated 1 or 2 are not even disclosed, here's those rated at 3

Yes, it could possibly be a cracked head, but the ohv is much more prone to that than the sohc.

hey josh, there are 50 styles of the same testers .... just tossed that 1 out there to show what can be done at home to check before you get bent over at a shop .....

cheers

but going back to the opening comment ... smokes on start up?? or is it just heavy exhaust? or small puff of oil being burned from the valve seals? or could it be phantom problem that is nothing at all?
