Sorry in advance if this is a dumb question

Isn't the overdrive button supposed to function when the truck is in gear?

My button only seems to work and light up while the truck is in park.

in normal operation the OD is working/being utilized as you drive, light is off.
hitting the OD button illuminates the OD light and turns the OD off, when driving you should see the RPMs raise when you hit the button.
test it while driving.
also, when the OD is turned off (light is on) the tranny stays locked up, thus allowing engine braking.

First thank your for your service and thank you for the reply.

I came to realize this afternoon that when in drive if I pull the shifter pass D (between the geafs) while sitting still the light comes on likening sure it should .

I'm not sure if that means something is loose or worn
