Check your trans level, if it's not low you might have sucked water in vent tube.

Could very well be the transfercase input seal is gone, allowing fluid to go from the transmission tailshaft housing into the transfercase.

See it all the time on the newer f150's.

On my 86 if you look where the tranny and transfer case bolt together there is a place to let any liquid out.Yes I know there is a gasket there but some have a little notch in there to drain. If your really curious loosen the bolts that hold the transfer case in pull it back and see if it leaks.

On an auto transmission there is supposed to be fluid in the tail housing. That groove is supposed to be filled with RTV silicone to keep the fluid IN.

checked tranny level seems a little higher, took the truck into my old shop pulled the check plug again, not as much came out seemed to just be over filled. the truck revs pretty high now before shifting out of first gear and its a rough shift. what could cause this i have been having this problem for a week or two till the truck locked up and broke the rear driveshaft :-/ ordering a new GKN style one from napa for like $298 w/ $60 dollar core.
