Solid Axle Swap 4x4
hey every one im new here and just was wondering about this swap im thinking about doing. so what i have is an 87 bII 2.9 eddie b. with auto transmission and "touch" 4 wheel drive. but i picked up an 87 bII with a 2.8 manual trans and manual t-case and want to swap the two. from what i read i need the hubs and master cylinder and obviously the trans and t case. i looked and it appears the holes are already in the fire wall and i think i can just change the brake pedal from the big one to the small one. i was just making sure i have all my bases covered before i tear into this project. so if anybody has any ideas comments or words of wisdom it would be glad to hear them. Thanks:icon_thumby:

i believe you need the pedal bracket, it will just unbolt and bolt back on. while your at it you should swap in a flywheel and clutch out of a 4.0L since its bigger and will take more abuse.

+1 on the 4.0 clutch upgrade. Great upgrade. Did it myself.

The only catch to it is that you need to hollow out a bit of the upper bell support on the donor trans. It won't hurt the integrity of the trans once it's bolted to the engine, it just needs clearenced a bit.

Even without a 4.0 my truck feels stronger and feels like it pulls out better with just the bigger clutch/flywheel on it.

Myself I would stay away from putting a 4.0 on the FM 145 tranny that came on the 2.8. The trans cant handle the power as well as the M50D.

4.0 CLUTCH. Not 4.0 ENGINE. He wants a manual transmission, not a bigger engine.

looks to me that he does indeed want a bigger engine. i would find a M50D to swap in. since it should bolt right in and will be strong enugh for the 4.0 when you get it.

I did the exact swap you're doing and I couldn't have been happier. I didn't have to clearance anything for the 4.0 clutch but I loved the swap. Just line the trucks up side by side and swap parts over piece by piece.

ok, I only read the original post, I missed the profile and the second post. Sorry Eddie.

Yeah, don't put a 4.0 in front of a 2.8 or 2.9 trans, the trans won't survive.

Any 4.0 RBV manual should be an M5.
