Can a wheel bearing fail and not get hot?

Ive never seen it.

I went to back up rusty 2.0 today after work and heard a horrid crunching/scraping noise. By the time i got home (13 miles) it was accompined by a squeek.

I thought it was the trans/clutch at first. But i can shut the motor off and let it roll backwards down a hill and hear it even.

Im 99% sure its a bearing...but i felt the hub...cool as a cucumber.

If it is the bearing im gonna be pissed, its only got 6000 miles on it,

In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.
I would definitely expect heat with a failing wheel bearing. Especially after drinking on it like that. Maybe it’s something else.

I crawled under didnt see nothin obvious. Im gonna pull the wheel this week.

I really do suspect the bearing though...its got old grease all around the cap and shit. I just wonder why it didnt get hot and it seems to roll good.

But i did notice when i mash the clutch and just let it roll backwards when i hear a crunch there is a drag slightly.

Wonder if just a couple rollers are bad?

I dont know lol.

Something in the rear drums come apart? Had that happen before.

Usually front wheel bearing failure is accompanied by a loud humming noise on the road and a lot of slop in every direction with that wheel off the ground.

I've had bearings go without generating much heat, but they were in the initial stages of failure and not catastrophic yet.

Wellllll....

It wasnt the wheel bearing.

Pulled it in the shop after work and yanked the tire...

One of the caliper pins were totally gone, the other was half way out and rubbing the rim, and the outer pad had the hold down prongs broke completly off.

I put it back togther with a couple new caliper pins i had in the truck and put the pad back on best i could.

Moral of the story...dont use old ass caliper pins no matter how easy it makes installation.

Guess im going back to o reileys and exchanging the bearings for pads.
