I just bought an 88 Ford Ranger with an 2.9/Auto. What kind of RPM's does your Rangers run going down the road. I'm beginning to learn the tranny's aren't good. Mine turns 3200 at 70 mph. Is that normal? Thanks, Matt

it all depends on the gearing. mine turns 4k with 31x10.50 and 4.10 gears but my overdrive doesn't work and thats at around 60

It depends on the gearing but that sounds about right in drive, not OD.

OD would be around 2300 to 2400 or so.

You should be moving pretty decently @ 4K in O/D (90mph?). :) I would suggest something, but the only thing I know about autos is to replace them when they go out. I hope they didn't charge you for looking at it...

I think the last time I actually was in O/D I was turning ~2,700 @ 70mph. Need to take it out on the highway soon...

Everyone has it right. Sounds like you're missing O/D. Mine will turn 3000 rpm in Drive @100kph (60 mph) with 31" rubber.
