Yep here's another one.

Would you:

A) Spend 12K to modify a truck with 100,000 miles on it but in great condition

B) Make large payments for the next 7 years on a new truck that has the features you want

Depends on the trucks and what you expect to do with them.
And, of course, if you buy the new one, your NOT going to do any modifications to it, now are you !!!
What's the truck you want to spend 12 grand on ?

I was trying to keep it vague to keep the audible sighs from happening.

???

Should I convert my Ranger to 4wd, match the rear diff to the front and add a rear air locker to it (12K estimate price)

Or

Just buy a new F-150 in the lot that has 4WD and a locker

Between those two options? F150 every time.

If it ain't broke, break it.
$12K would make a good down payment on a new 4x4 F150. Then you can spend the next few years paying it off.

Do the ranger.

Then buy yourself a decent 92-96 F150 and still be 40k below a new one.

So take a 12K loan on a truck with 100,000 dependable miles or 33K on a new vehicle

I wouldn't buy the new vehicle. Just swap over to an existing 4x4 if that's what you need and be done with it. At the end of the day you'd be done instead of gathering parts and hoping you had the process figured out.

For that matter, I probably wouldn't spend $12k doing it. Find something around the value of your current Ranger and try to make the swap even. Forget car payments.

Nope... no way would I convert it. For $12k you could buy a nice 4x4 truck of the same year as yours and be able to buy off the shelf parts to fix it easily.

If you REALLY want something new, wait a month or so until the dealers are hurting from this virus deal, I think it will be a buyers market for a lot of things.
