I didn’t get to talk to the owner. I would assume either twin stuck conversion or pto.

It is a twin stick of sorts, left engages the t-case and right selects the range.

Looks like a military surplus Jeep (AKA a MB)

I'm not smart enough to know what "PTO" is. but the picture @85_Ranger4x4 posted helped me figure it out.

Heavy duty applications often have a PTO on the transmission or t-case to run something like a hoist, hydraulic pump for a dump bed or winch.

After the war Willys sold jeeps as farm equipment that had a PTO or belt pulley like a farm tractor of the time.

And as you add PTO and hydraulics to your jeep you gain more and more levers too...

At the boat dealership I worked at after high school we had a old willys jeep that had the 3-lever arrangement. it also had a power steering pump to run either a rear lift boom or front snow blade. It was quite a powerful little thing, had a front &rear ball mount to move boats around with, 5.38 gears so in low range could move it if it could maintain traction. wasn’t something youd want on the highway, 4-wheel drum brakes, unbalanced bias ply tires and 45mph at best.

In normal heavy duty trucks it is different, there is a port on the trans or t-case where a pump or belt drive can be powered.

That said my Ranger has a PTO port on the transfer case...

And I keep an eye on the commercial truck of the JY section in hopes of finding a pump like that to mount on a t-case like that...

That’s most likely a Chelsea PTO. The 2 most common PTO manufacturers are Chelsea and Muncie.
Chelsea PTOs are red.
Muncie PTOs are blue.

The PTO and pump pictured are separate pieces, usually from different manufacturers. You can bolt different things up to the PTO depending on the desired application... although hydraulic pumps are the most common.

That's not as dumb as it sounds - power the tractor from batteries up hill and charge them from the generator going back down.
