This was the issue I was thinking of, I dunno if it's ONLY a 5.4 3v issue though since the 4.6 is basically the same engine as far as the heads are concerned. :dunno:

It's still a nice gold color. I just bought the truck like 2.5 months ago. I had the manifolds done and new brakes etc. I only got to drive the truck less that 1200 miles. I put maybe one tank of fuel through it.
I was questioning the possibly new oil filter is all.

If it is a 2v it is totally different than a 3v 5.4 and what what I called it the 3.0 of the F-150 world.

Although some may say they are a tad underpowered with enough RPM they can move mountains... and they are not scared to Rev either.

They have won a ton of rewards, probably one of the best engines Ford has built period.

And for whatever reason you never hear of the 3v version having problems like the 5.4 which makes no sense.

Jd power and wards loved them.

They didn't eject spark plugs near as often as the 2v 5.4 and had no spark plug breakage issues like a 3v.

They just did what they could do as long as they could do it. Good little cockroach motors. :icon_thumby:

Clean your room before you criticise the world.
I was told the oil was changed when I bought it which seemed right to me cause it was clean. And from all I could find it is a 2v engine.
Pull the timing cover and see if the guides are in tact also look for any play in the timing chain.. I believe that this engine is almost the same as the 5.4l. if it is the chain you should pull the oil pan and clean any debris from the pickup tube also replace the oil pump with a high pressure volume pump from melling...

just did this on my 5.4l triton 3 valve and it runs much quieter.
This was my overall plan. I hope the tensioners aren't boogered. I don't wanna pull the pan cause thats a whole lot more than I wanna do... But if that's what's gotta happen I guess

Crossed threads are tight threads.
at around 120k miles, the 5.4 in my F150 suddenly made a horrendous tick, loss of power and compression, and CEL light. Turned out to be a broken valve spring. It was $1300 bucks at the dealership including tow, diagnosis, leakdown test, parts, labor, tax, and warranty. Never had a problem since. Well, the power steering is loud, but I live with it.

if guides are broken you will have to pull the pan to de clog the oil pickup
I recommend replacing the oil pump with high volume / pressure pump.
Melling M360 Oil Pump for Ford 5.4L
I don't know if this will fit the 4.6l but I would imagine that there is an 4.6l equivalent

Do you guys know if the 4.6l has the phasers? I think one generation had them but I don't know which one it was. Mine is an 07. Which of if my googling skills are correct then it shouldn't be.

Easy enough to find out... stick a scanner on it and look for the PID for cam timing. But yea I believe only the 3v engines had VCT (y)
