2002 Ranger 4 cylinder 5 speed manual in sig below, 64K miles. Was driving today and the truck kind of sputtered a few times here & there, basically like a hiccup. It did this enough that I was wondering what it was, but not enough to think something's seriously wrong. Then all of a sudden the truck starts shaking pretty good when I press on the accelerator, esp. in 1-3 gears. Also feels like it may have less power. The gear shifter is vibrating a whole lot more than normale also & the check engine light came on. Trans issue, clutch, torque converter, plug/wires, etc. - any ideas?

Update... Took it for a spin today and at idle the truck is fine. W the truck in N I can rev the engine and it sounds fine, so the problem is only when the truck is in gear and under accelleration. If I'm coasting in gear w/o pressing on the accellerator, it's fine. But as soon as I press on the gas, the truck shakes, I'm thinking transmission, any help is GREATLY appreciated. Is there a way I can read the code(s) since the check engine light is on, kinda like how GM has their OBD-II code reader you can borrow at Auto Zone or Advance Auto?

Pulled the codes & got:

P0171 - System to lean Bank 1

P0301 - Cylinder 1 misfire detected

What does this mean in English?

This sounds like an engine problem, not a transmission problem.
