I am trying to diagnose the cause for no temp reading on my ‘87 2.9 liter Ranger. I have installed a new thermostat and block temp sensor. I have removed the temp gauge from the instrument cluster. I have a multimeter and a continuity tester. How can I test the gauge itself? Thanks!

Reinstall it.

Pull the single wire off the sender (you did replace the sender right? Not the sensor? The sensor is 2 wires and sends info to the ECM only, the sender is 1 wire and is only for gauge)

Take the single wire and shove a paperclip or something metal in it, turn the key on and ground the paperclip to metal. If the gauge pegs on "H" then the wireing and gauge are working.

Thanks for your help! The gauge passed your test. As I think you suspected, It was a bad sender.
