- My credo
- The perfect is the enemy of the good.
I'm trying to sort the spring code because I have to make a new door jamb label, it didn't have one (the 97 XLT). The shop manual lists all the different front/rear codes that my truck could have had. Oasis didn't give me any info on it.
Fronts are always some variant of 5310 and rears 5560. But there are like a dozen fronts and a half dozen rears and the rest of the Part Number tells you something - I don't know what.
So anyone who can help me with this I'd sure appreciate it.
Truck's gross is 4,920. That might help because I think that's pretty close to the max gross, I've seen some around 5,100 and then if they are 2wd they are less. What I'm saying there is, the springs are just about for sure going to be towards the heavier/stiffer ones of the list, but, without more info I can't tell which those would be. Shooting blind I'd say MX might be a choice if they're in order.
So far I can't find any markings on them front nor rear as to that they are.
I've got info for all the rest of the door jamb sticker, except, front/rear gross weights and total/front reserves so I assume something reasonable, like, 2,750 front, 2570 rear for the grosses. Those you kind of like to know but front/rear gross is something you'd only care about when the truck is extremely loaded. You already know where weight should be in it (not all at the very back), so if you don't exceed gross, which I do know, it's something you, or the next owner if there ever were one, basically never use. Same with reserve, that's telling you how much you can hang off the front or rear of the vehicle and have it still in spec and those are small numbers, it just tells you, can I hang a 500 lb plow off the front and expect the vehicle to drive safely, no. Can I hang a spare tire carrier off the rear bumper, almost for sure yes. Something like 108 front reserve and 253 total reserve would be about right and conservative. I guess that makes rear reserve 145. Or maybe it's 253, I dunno, but the point is, those are small numbers ,you can do some things as to adding but not huge (and stay in spec).
So I'm comfortable fudging a little on the front/rear gross and front/total reserve because I looked at enough similar trucks (their stickers) of that gen with similar gross weights, to get a good feel for where my truck should be and I'm not overly concerned if I'm a bit off for the reasons stated already. Springs, though, I'd kind of like to know, in the end if I can't solve it I'll pick something and move on with life and worry about it if/when I ever changed out springs which the chance of that is not zero but it's small at least right now.
