Howdy ya'll,

I am thinking of installing a 60 series land cruiser snorkel on my 89 BII (and yes...I know what they are for and all the pros and cons. I have one on my Tacoma). Can I replace the factory airbox and filter for an aftermarket one? Any thoughts on what kind and where I coudl track one down?

I can't remember the specifics for the years this particular mod was done but if you check in the Tech Library in the black band at the top of the page, you'll find a few articles of people doing a snorkel modification.

My credo
In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.
Junk yard is a good source for air boxes. Many newer trucks have a round box shaped similar to the one you pictured. Get one from a vehicle with the same size engine you have so the MAF sensor is the right size.

For anyone wanting to do this - the 60 series snorkels fit good enough. You need to make your own template out of cardboard though. Do your best with the template, hold your nose and drill! Also, I had to cut the 90 degree elbow off the snorkel, so it was just straight. Finally, I had to move the starter solenoid and the “power distribution center” forward a few inches.

So now when we approach a mud hole... we send you in first. I like that idea!

Yes sir! Except, I am sure my electronics would complain. I have a built 2015 Tacoma with a snorkel and I always go through the water crossings first. Of course, the electronics on that are a little more "buttoned-up" than my old BII!
