tell him you want to do an extended test drive and that your mechanic is x far away and so you expect to have the truck this long. tell him you are interested but want to have your mechanic go over it first. if he is not trying to hide anything, he will be ok with you taking it for an extended test drive
I agree, I just need to convince him I'm legit and not trying to steal the truck. I'd leave my vehicle there while I took his. I'd even consider offering a deposit in the form of a check as a good faith gesture. And buy gas! I'll probably have to have it for a few hours at least.

nah, you are stuck with what he says. no point in worrying since its sold though. bummer because it was a nice looking truck but that means it wasn't the right one

might start looking a bit farther out in your searches. maybe you can find one that low enough priced that taking small trip and getting it is worth it.

like out into the more country areas around you. sometimes farm communities will just park trucks up by the front gate with a sign in the window

I like the green one better for a 20 year old truck, clutches jobs are far cheaper then rebuilding an automatic. Plus, not many people know how to drive a standard transmission and you will have very little competition from other buyers for it unless it is listed on E-Bay.
