I was thinking about this the other day, and I was wondering what the hourly rate for auto repair shops, was in your area. At the shop I work at, its about $108/hour, and that is a private shop, and a non chain store in Calgary, AB. How about everyone else.

I worked as a tech at a ford dealer the rate was 89 for gas and 120 for diesel. But i stopped working for them in late 07.

the going rate for small shops around here is 60-65/hr, every once in a while you can find a shop that is 40-50/hr, dealers are usually around 90-110/hr.

When I got an estimate for the body damage on my ranger the print-sheet said $54/Hr. That blows my mind that its that expensive other places.

Thats because body shops are way cheaper than mechanical shops.

Hell, insurance only pays like $42 an hour labor here for body shops.

I broke my hand recently and needed my spark plugs replaced on my 6 cylinder, ford wanted just over 8 bucks a piece for spark plugs and $45.00 to put them in.

Around here in Southeast Michigan - Ford dealers are $95 an hour labor. Smaller independent shops about $65 - 70 an hour labor.

A couple of places around here charge 40/hr for labor but they're small-time hacks who only take on the little jobs. Any real garage is around 70. Believe it or not I got an insurance quote from the local Ford dealership, they quoted 4 hrs at 85/hr for installing a side mirror and buffing out some light scratches plus the price of the mirror which was outrageous. It worked out good for me though because I got a check for around 400, went the the junkyard and paid 6 bucks for the mirror and just buffed out the scratches myself. The places that make the most profit are the ones that hire these kids right out of the special-ed class and pay them less than 10/hr because if they're charging 60+ an hour for the work then even after all of the overhead there's still good profit to be made.

Well around my place here in northern Western Washington, the mechanic I have been using for about 12 years is still $45 per hour. He doesn't do major work though, so I have another mechanic who I use to do the major stuff, short of rebuilds. He charges $65 per hour. Other large shops in town, Bellingham, charge anywhere from $65-95 per hour and I haven't even checked with the dealerships, cause I refuse to take any of our vehicles to the ones in our town.

I find I usually use my regular guy for most of the more difficult for a DIYer jobs, and the things he can't handle, I either try or take to the other guy. We are really tightfisted with money, so it has to be something that requires specialty tools or legally approved disposal of chemicals, or something heavier than hubby and I can lift together before we take it to a shop.
