In the near future im planning on rebuilding my 4R70W trans for my motor swap build, and im trying to do as much research as possible before starting, ive been reading and looking around but havent really found what i was hoping to. I bought a book thinking it was gonna be like a manual but it is nothing close.
This is what i have now - - http://www.summitracing.com/parts/tci-892803/overview/

So my question is does anyone know of a step by step book or manual for rebuilding a 4R70W/AODE?

All I know about it is that is one of Ford's best automatic transmissions ever. And It's rumored that with a billet input shaft and race clutches that it's capable of holding +800hp.

Personally, I hate the way mine shifts in my 99 5.0 Ex. But I haven't looked into it... Possibly fixed by a shift kit or a Trans Commander...

Hopefully there are some good responses to this thread, I'm curious about the 4R70W too.

There is a lot you can do to them. If yours doesn't have the diode sprag (racheting style) that is a good replacement. If you are keeping under 500hp there really isn't too much you really need to do. A good shift kit, trans go is good, and high friction clutches will do most all you need. You can get Alto Reds if you desire but not really required. The direct clutch is kinda a weak point. If you were to put Altos in any place this would be it. You can buy aftermarket machined drums if you wish but just restacking with thinner steels to get an extra clutch or 2 will be fine. Get a good overdrive band. Those things alone will make a pretty strong 4r70. Beyond that you will be looking at aftermarket shafts and drums.

Thanks for the info i do plan to stay under 500hp. Do you have a good source for buying the different parts you said or pretty much just search around? Seems TRANSGO only does shift kits so..... also im planning to keep the trans computer controlled so im looking for things that wont affect that.

I didn't care for the way both my 4R70W's shifted. But after I got my handheld for my sport Trac and increased the shifting in the tune, I love the way it shifts and operates now. No slipping, hard, firm tire chirping shifts (if I'm on it hard enough). It acts like a shift kit was installed, but its just the way the ecu controls the shifts...

The 4r70w is not known to have problems. My advice is to do a simple rebuild, shift kit, and inspect the sprag for the correct one as stated, as well as inspect the direct clutch for scaring, cracks, etc and combine that with a good tune will net you years of trouble free happy service...

Well the trans i have has over 200k miles so with that what would you suggest for a rebuild kit? I'm really not even familiar with what all is in an automatic trans so i really dont know what all should be replaced with new and what is ok to reuse, besides the obvious clutch pack.
Ive been looking at rebuild kits and they kinda seem all over the place with what they come with, so do i just go with a basic kit and buy the other parts that were mentioned before separatly, and thats it?
