So I need new chains for the saw. I had a sheet somewhere with a part number on it for the ones it takes, but I have lost it. I actually think it may have been destroyed in a basement flood.

Anyway, there is a set of numbers on the end of my bar. It goes 20" 3/8 58 72E. The inside drive teeth of my chain are stamped with a 73.

Would I be correct in assuming that this means I need a 20 inch chain, 3/8 pitch, .058 gauge, with either 72 or 73 links?

I did some digging in the interim, I found that the 73 stamping on the drive teeth of the chain I have seems to be a marking used by the chain's manufacturer to denote a .058 gauge chain. The part numbers for their .050 chains all start in 72, the part numbers for the .058 chains start in 73.

I used that, since Oregon was the brand I was looking at. Their thing said they were "unsure" of the fit for the CS2172, but were sure it fit the CS2172WH.

I did some researching and found that the only difference is that the WH has a bunch of electric heaters for winter use.

I just used the listing for the Husky 372 - that showed 72DL for a 20" bar, which is pretty typical for all Husqvarna saws. A gauge 0.058" is not that common in the US though, usually it's 0.050" or 0.063". The "73" is the Oregon model number, and is associated with the 58 gauge.

If you get a new bar too you can use whatever gauge you want. I'd be looking for a 0.050", 72DL bar and chain combo, because you can get 3/8', 72DL, 0.050" chains anywhere.

I think your local ace hardware is a Steil dealer and a small engine repair shop they will answer this question even if you dont buy it from them.

I don't trust those guys that much.

They had a decent small engine guy who quit. The guy in there now isn't too bright. Their GM is kind of an idiot too.

Call the guy up at the Northampton ace they are always fixing mowers and stuff.

Tell them a driver pointed you to them since you dont have much faith in your store anymore.

Stihl dealer will have mostly Stihl-sized chains, which are intentionally different from everyone else. They'll be mostly 0.063" with different DL counts.

Sounds about right...

I usually go half chisel, full chisel gets dull quick and is tricky to sharpen... forget about safety chains (unless you grind down the safety parts)...oh and sometimes it'll be a skip tooth.

This is the best sharpener I've ever used. Stihl makes good ones.

I know .050 is the most common gauge in the US, but according to the SN tag this is a Swedish built unit.
